Joint Mobilisation
What is it? and how does it help you move better?
What Are Joint Mobilisations?
Joint mobilisations are a hands-on therapy technique used to improve how your joints move. They involve skilled, controlled movements applied by a therapist to a joint, typically within its normal range of motion. These movements are usually gentle and repetitive, designed to restore natural movement without causing pain.
Unlike exercises you do on your own, joint mobilisations are passive, meaning the therapist does the work while your body relaxes. This allows precise targeting of stiff or restricted areas that may be difficult to address through stretching or strengthening alone.
How Do Joint Mobilisations Help?
When a joint isn’t moving well, it can lead to stiffness, discomfort, and compensation in other parts of the body. Joint mobilisations help by:
Reducing stiffness and improving range of motion
Decreasing pain via neurophysiological effects on joints and surrounding tissues
Enhancing joint lubrication and circulation
Supporting better overall movement patterns
For example, if your ankle is stiff after a sprain, you might notice discomfort when walking or squatting. A therapist can apply specific mobilisations to restore ankle movement, which can make everyday activities feel smoother and more comfortable.
HVLA vs LVLA: What’s the Difference?
There are different types of joint mobilisation techniques, often described based on their speed and intensity:
HVLA (High Velocity, Low Amplitude): These are quick, precise movements applied over a very small range. You might hear a “click” or “pop,” which is simply gas releasing within the joint, not bones cracking! This technique is often used to rapidly improve movement and reduce pain.
LVLA (Low Velocity, Low Amplitude): These are slower, more controlled movements performed within a joint’s natural range. They are typically repeated rhythmically and are ideal for gently restoring mobility and reducing stiffness over time.
Both approaches are safe when performed by a trained professional, and your therapist will choose the most appropriate method based on your condition, comfort level, and goals.
Who Can Benefit from Joint Mobilisations?
Joint mobilisations can be helpful for a wide range of people, including those with:
Joint stiffness or reduced mobility
Sports injuries or overuse issues
Back or neck pain
Post-surgical recovery needs
Everyday aches from prolonged sitting or repetitive activities
We combine them with exercise, education, and other therapies to create a well-rounded rehabilitation plan.
What to Expect During Treatment
During a session, your therapist will assess your movement and identify any restricted joints. They will then apply targeted mobilisations tailored to your needs. Most people find the treatment comfortable, and many notice immediate improvements in movement.
You may also be given exercises to reinforce the benefits of the treatment and help maintain your progress between sessions.
